Above Ground Storm Shelters in Joplin, MO

Ask about the standard first. Then we'll talk steel.

First question I'd ask any shelter salesman is simple: does this thing meet FEMA P-361 or ICC 500? Those are the two safe room standards, and a real installer won't mind showing you the papers.

Now, what you're actually buying. It's a heavy steel room that gets bolted to a concrete slab, usually out in the garage, so nobody has to go down stairs in the dark.

The bolts matter as much as the steel does. FEMA's guidance says it has to be anchored so it can't lift, tip or slide, and that's why the installer is going to want a good look at your floor before they quote you anything.

How it usually goes

Somebody comes out and checks the slab. If it's sound, they set the room and bolt it down. If it's cracked or old, it might need to be poured again first.

Questions people ask

Can it sit on my garage floor?

Maybe. That's up to the installer once they've seen the slab.

Is it as safe as going underground?

If it meets the standard and it's bolted down right, it's built to do the same job.
